Unspoiled Reviews - Avengers Endgame

05/08/2019

Avenger's Endgame. After so many years of teasers, easter eggs, and Stan Lee Cameos, this film had one hell of a difficult job to draw this phase of the MCU to an end. So, what's my take on how Marvel decided to close this phase of their Cinematic Universe? You'll have to wait and see...

This three hour epic is the culmination of over a decade of Marvel's Cinematic Exploits, ending Phase 3 of their Cinematic Universe, and paving the way for Phase 4 to begin. For those of you who don't know, Marvel has split their cinematic universe into several different phases.
- Phase 1 saw the members of the original Avengers team being introduced in their own films, and meeting for the first time to defeat Loki.
- Phase 2 sees the different members in adventures of their own, with additional members being added to the roster, and working to defeat Ultron.
- Phase 3 sees the different heroes conflicting with both villains and heroes, before being united in their quest to prevent Thanos from enacting his master plan.

After Infinity War, and the shocking events of 'The Snap', Endgame had audiences across the world wondering how the heroes would defeat their greatest foe and save the universe, with help from the newest addition Captain Marvel.
As this is an unspoiled review, I won't delve too deep into the plot of the film, but if you want to keep this 100% spoiler free, then scroll down past the picture of Thanos. Everyone else, keep reading.

The plot of the film was, on the surface, fairly simple. If you've watched the trailers, then you've already got a gist of the heroes' plan to defeat the Titan, and for almost the entire film the plot was well executed and entertaining. The journey of the heroes is filled with the usual issues, problems, and successes which kept the audience enthralled in the action on the screen.
      HOWEVER
This film has a major problem. I won't go into that here, because that will contain LOTS of spoilers, but I'm not particularly happy about it...

Most of the actors which were involved in this project, and all of the films leading up to this one, were incredible! Obviously, there is a frankly enormous list of A-listers involved in this, and they absolutely deserve the amazing recognition which they're getting from the mainstream press. So here, I'm going to talk about my favorite performances from the film.
I wish I had a chance to go through all of their performances individually, but I simply don't have time to do that with any justice. For that reason, I'm going to focus on two of my favorite performances from the whole film, and will probably take some time in the future to run down the other cast members in their various other projects.

Arguably my favorite performance of the entire film was by Paul Rudd. He returns as Scott Lang, and from the moment he appears on screen he keeps audiences on the edge of their seats to see what he's going to do next. Although he is a relatively recent addition to the MCU, Rudd gives a performance which rivals any of the more established characters and cast. As well as his fantastic comedic delivery and sense of humor, Rudd also kept audiences' emotions on he edge. There is scene in the film where Paul's performance had audience's hearts in their mouths, it is full of genuine emotion and suspense, and confirms to me that this is one of his best performances in recent years!

Josh Brolin was absolutely phenomenal as Thanos. He brought one of Marvel's most iconic and intimidating villains to life, and did so in a way which seemed so natural and realistic. In both Infinity war and Endgame, Brolin captured not only Thanos' unrivaled strength and power, but also his humanity and moral views to the point where you could understand his actions and motivations. Brolin has been in so many awesome films, but I think that this performance is one of his best (even better than his performance as Cable in Deadpool 2). The other Villains of the MCU have a real challenge to compete for dominance against this Titan of the screen. (joke 100% intended).

Unlike most of the things I've reviewed here, this film is absolutely full of CGI and special effects. Although this film is not revolutionary in the realism of their effects, and some of these are fairly unrealistic, none of them really pull the audience away from the action on the screen which is a success in itself.
The props, lighting and general atmosphere of the film was expertly done. They gave the audience the overall feel that this film was the most important and intense experience in the MCU yet. Everyone involved should be immensely proud of the work they've done.

Overall. There are two main take aways from this film.
1) If you haven't seen it yet, then you are 100% missing out on an awesome experience.
2) The future films in the MCU have some seriously big shoes to fill...

The acting is great, the performances and effects are incredible, and almost everyone I know left that film thinking: "Well, that was fricking awesome!!"

Until next time,

Tim
